How IELTS Score Compares With Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)

If you are applying for Canadian permanent residence to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, it’s no longer news that you will need to submit your IELTS score and the version you must do is IELTS General Training. Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are the national standards used in Canada for describing, measuring and recognizing your English language proficiency for living and working in Canada. Following the recent changes, minimum CLB threshold you must meet before you submit your application to CIC is CLB 7.0, which is equivalent to IELTS 6.0. However, you must aim to score as high as possible in order to outshine other competitors.

For the purpose of migration or study in Canada, you might want to know what your IELTS score translates to in Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). Here’s a table that shows different score ranges.

CLB Level IELTS General Training Scores

How IELTS Score Compares With Council Of European Framework of References For Languages (CEFR)

Many institutions- schools and immigration authorities, refer to CEFR to make their decisions. It’s a good step to know exactly what CEFR level is required of you and what IELTS score is equivalent to that level.

If your IELTS score falls in the range of 8.5 and 9.0, you have the highest CEFR rating- C2. If you score between 7.0 and 8.0, you have CEFR rating C1. An IELTS score between 5.5 and 6.5 fetches you CEFR rating B2 while the lowest CEFR rating-B1 relates to any IELTS score between 4.0 and 5.0.
